The GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It works on many operating systems, in many languages.
Make sure & look under the tutorials section on this site for help in using this program, there are many there from beginner to expert. You need to get a .dds convertor for this, you can try DXTBmp (see link below). I did try this program briefly, before I got Paint Shop Pro & it is loaded with features, the best free image program I've seen. |

IrfanView is a very fast, small, compact and innovative FREEWARE (for non-commercial use) graphic viewer for Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003. Much more information available on the site. . Make sure to download the plugins so that you can read (but not write ).dds files. As far as I know, you are not able to make apha channels with this program. |

Create 16 bit Extended Bitmaps for FS2000 and CFS2. Edit existing Textures in your favourite paint program. Edit Alpha Channels. Reads and writes 565, 555-1, 444-4 and DXT1. Sizes up to 1024 including non-square. DXT Bmp can convert .dds files & can be used to make alpha channels. Make sure you take a look around this site, there are a lot of free programs here. |

This program is not free, but they do have a 60 day free trial. I mention it here, because this is the one I use & I can't recommend it enough. If you are contemplating buying an image program, give the free trial a shot. You will need the DDS Photoshop Plugin to work with any .dds files. |

This is a DXTC texture compression plugin for Adobe Photoshop that
allows you to open and save .dds files in RGB format. The plugin reads
and writes .dds files compressed or uncompressed. This plugin will also work with Jasc Paint Shop™ Pro® 8. Regan has let me know that this will work with PaintShopPro 6 also. |

NIFtexture v1.3 |
NIFTexture is a simple program designed to allow you to modify the textures used in NIF (NetImmerse) 3D model files. This allows you to reuse existing models with new, custom textures. It was specifically designed to work with The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind NIF files but may work with NIF files for other games as well. The program cannot create new NIF files and only allows the editing of the texture filenames. NOTE: I love this program for retexturing, no hex editing is involved with this, for more info on how to use this, you can also get Srikandi's Downloadable Skinning Tutorial. Explains further how to use this retexture utility easily. |
